The first time I took some European friends into a 24/7 mega Wal-mart, one of them asked me "Purple ketchup? Purple? Who needs that?" Indeed, the insane quantity of items can be mind-boggling. I counted not 2, not 4, but 14 different varieties of tomato soup. Healthy choice, low-sodium, with…

newlywed, living in Paris, always trying to find hard-to-get American ingredients without paying a huge premium for directly imported goods, vegetarian.
I am trying to make the most of living in Paris, and have spent considerable time learning French and getting to know the city. I am a huge fan of going to old school cinemas here, and the theater. I especially love to go see the old classic American films they run on the big screen sometimes. (We should be so proud of our own film culture and do that in the US!) My next endeavor is signing up for some pastry classes :)
Before moving here, I lived in China, Mexico, Germany, and Guatemala, so I like a wide range of dishes from all over and have incorporated things I've learned into American recipes and vice versa.
I read A LOT. I used to ride horses all the time and still love them, but find it difficult in the city. I love dance, particularly ballet, modern and jazz. My husband and I are starting ballroom in the near future.
My favorite things to cook
anything with coconut milk, curry, baked goods esp w/ chocolate, colorful dishes, one-dish dinners on work nights
My favorite family cooking traditions
baking
My cooking triumphs
lemon cheesecake with berry coulis - my husband's favorite cake.
A 5 course veg dinner for my friends in Paris, one of whom is studying to be a professional butcher. Everyone loved trying new vegetables and no one complained about still feeling hungry - the most common excuse for eschewing veg dishes.
My cooking tragedies
I've fried pretty much every appliance one would have in the kitchen, including some flames coming from the oven. What can I say, growing up i was experimental, but had zero common sense. My mother actually banned me from using it at one point. Live and learn!
