About this Cook
I am a wife and mother of 4 wonderful children. I work part-time as a speech and language therapist.
My favorite things to cook
I consider finding new recipes as a hobby. I love to see how diiferent foods can be infused with various flavors or combind together to make a fabulous dish. In addition, I believe the visual effects of "plating" a dish makes a difference in the taster's review. Thank you to everyone for submitting these wonderful and delicious recipes and all of your insightful reviews and techniques!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love to make Challah! I usually make it with a recipe that calls for 5-6 lbs of high gluten flour. I make this amount in order to make a special bracha/blessing when a take a piece of the dough off. (I freeze some of the challah for later shabbatot/sabbathes). My friend Amy gave me a wonderful idea and a huge time saver - I make my dough at night, place it in a garbage bag with a little bit of oil and place that into the refrigerator over night. Overnight, the yeast makes the dough rise. The bag is huge in the morning - and ready to be braided! (This way - I don't have to make the dough in the morning, wait 2 hours for it to rise, and then begin the braiding and rising and baking process). This way - it doesn't take the whole day to make challah! I always save some dough for each of my children to make their own personal challah when they come home from school! They get to shape it or braid it and can decorate it with colored sprinkles or chocolate chips and they feel so proud of wha
My cooking triumphs
I used to be a vegetarian! I stopped eating chicken, turkey and fish when I was in 2nd grade. I did not want to eat anything that had the same name as an animal. When I was in 8th grade I stopped eating meat. My husband knew what he was getting into when he married me - I would make all the side dishes and dairy dishes. If he wanted chicken of meat - he ended up cooking it! When I was 8 months pregnant with my oldest daughter - I finaly gave in! I started to eat chicken. Slowly, I ended up adding urkey and some fish to my diet as well. I defitnitly think I shock my parents everytime I tell them about a fabulous chicken or fish recipe that I have made or show them pictures of it!!!
My cooking tragedies
Because I have not added meat to my diet, I shy away from making it! I know there are many delicious recipes out there, but I do not have the confidence in making it - as I like to taste the finshed product to know exactly what I am serving. Anyways I know I would not be able to compete against my Mother-in-Law's roast beef!

Mushroom Rice
This was very good - I made a couple of changes. I used olive oil instead of butter to saute the mushrooms. I used onions instead of green onions. At the end, i added both freshly chopped parsley and basil. It was very tasty.

Spiced Pears and Pomegranate
This was delicious! I used Yellow Delicious Apples instead of pears (that's what I had on hand) - but I will try it next time with the Pears. I liked the nutmeg but my kids were unfamiliar with it and didn't like it. Next time I will just leave it out. This is VERY pretty and I love using Pomegranates when they are in season!

Muffaletta Pizza
This was very good - I did modify it though. I did not use any of the deli meats - and I only the mozzarella cheese. I used Trader Joes herb Pizza dough and followed the rest of the recipe as stated. My husband and I loved it. We like the "sauceless" pizza. I make vegetable pizza quite often - but I usually top the dough with vegis and then sprinkle on the shredded cheese the last 2 minutes of baking. I really liked this recipe's method of prebaking the pizza crust and then mixing the vegis with the shredded mozzarella cheese - It was delicious! I will be making this again!
