White Chocolate, Chocolate Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 11, 2009
The kids went nuts for these, but I found them just to be "meh", and I'm really not sure why... Why wouldn't these be a winner? Great texture - soft 'n' chewy. Almost reminiscent of a brownie. Something was "off" with the taste, though - I can't quite figure it out. Used half baking soda and half baking powder, added a tsp of vanilla, and used Reese's pieces instead of white chocolate. They will get eaten up by the family, but I won't make 'em again.

My Mom`s Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Mar. 9, 2009
The only change I made was using HOT COFFEE instead of WATER. (Always...) This cake is soooo incredibly dense and rich. I made it in a bundt pan, same cook time. I enjoyed this a lot more though when it was fresh from the oven, all hot.

Chocolate Glaze I

Reviewed: Mar. 9, 2009
I'm with Lanie23 and What A Dish! I was in a pinch and made this - yeah, there are so many better glazes on this site. IE: Shiny Chocolate Glaze / Satiny Glaze / etc. Texturally, this is more of a FROSTING or ICING instead of a GLAZE. It did the job, but I prefer something with more OOMPH!

Mini Key Lime Cupcakes

Reviewed: Mar. 9, 2009
Super fun (and easy) to make! I did use a bit more lime juice where called for, and probably more zest, too. First day, they're a little intense, but they do mellow in the fridge. I'd advise making them a day in advance, at least. (These were a hit with the kids, as well!)

Classic Peanut Butter Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 5, 2009
Though they've got a nice flavor, these are on the Dry 'n' Crumbly side. Used Butter Flavor Crisco, Added a Tsp vanilla, cut the sugars a bit and put in some Reese's Pieces.

Beefy Baked Ravioli

Reviewed: Mar. 3, 2009
Alright, but unnecessary. Cooking the ravioli, browning the 'burger, layering then baking? The extra effort didn't really give a much better result. (Added onion, red & green bell pepper, Penzey's Italian Herb and fennel.)

Hamburger Hash

Reviewed: Mar. 3, 2009
This works when you're down to the basics - but you absolutely have to doctor it up, or you'll have flavorless stuff in front of you. I added an extra bouillon cube, carrots, celery, Penzey's dehyd green & red bell peppers, more onion, garlic, parsley, Worcestershire, basil, Cayenne, TONS of Salt and Pepper, and two cans of Cream Of Mushroom. I served it in soup bowls with those new Cole's Cheese Filled Breadstix on the side.

Sopapilla Cheesecake Dessert

Reviewed: Mar. 3, 2009
This is really really good - and an excellent way of introducing Cheesecake to my husband. I did cut the sugar a little in the (Neufchatel) cream cheese. I only used half of the cinnamon sugar mixture, which was fine - but next time I'll up the cinnamon... A LOT.

Chicken Scarpariello

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2009
Quick, easy and delicious! Splashed a little bit of Half & Half and lemon juice in. Omitted the shallots because I didn't have any. Added in a bit of Parmesan cheese. Thickened the sauce with flour. Served over LEMON PEPPER PASTA.

Lemon Pepper Pasta

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2009
As a side dish, this was simply not good... We salvaged this by topping with our CHICKEN SCARPARIELLO (from this site). Mixing it was actually a winner - the sauce complemented it well.

Hot Fudge Cake

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2009
When I read Leazer's review "No Flavor But Sweet" - I was confused. But, then I made it and tasted it...Now it all makes sense. Weird texture, flavor is just "hot sugar" not "hot fudge". (I even cut the white sugar to 1/2 cup) I'd say if you want something in this vein, make some of your favorite brownies and coat those with hot fudge sauce.

Best Brownies

Reviewed: Feb. 27, 2009
NOVACAT2003... You couldn't be more accurate. What the heck did I do wrong, when other reviewers are getting fudgey goodness? I didn't get even close to that - it was all cake. I HAND MIXED everything, so I know that wasn't the problem. As a cake, it's alright but I didn't want cake. I wanted ooey gooey fudgey brownies.

Slow Cooker Beef Stroganoff I

Reviewed: Feb. 26, 2009
Following JILLYBEAN14's review, this was awesome!!! The only difference from her tips was omitting the bouillon, using half pack of BEEFY ONION soup mix, and serving over Barilla Plus Rotini Noodles. Going in the "paper" recipe box.

Oaty Cereal Bars

Reviewed: Feb. 25, 2009
Much like Demimi, I had a box of that weird Kashi "Go Lean" cereal, and it just wasn't my bag... Thankfully, I found this recipe! I doubled it, due to the SIX CUPS of the cereal - but cut the sugar and honey to 3/4 cups instead. Still very sweet, but this was the only pleasant way to use up that terrible cereal!

Roasted Lemon Herb Chicken

Reviewed: Feb. 25, 2009
I was pretty nervous about making this for Mr. "Not Real Big On Lemon" - but I threw caution to the wind, and put it together. Only changes were: Adding a kiss of rosemary, and stuffing the cavity with lemons and onions. The first hour was spent covered in foil, and basted every thirty minutes. Moist, flavorful and wouldn't you know? The chicken was literally picked clean.

Baked Pears

Four Plus Stars. It's not something you could put into rotation, but WOWZA!!! Unexpected good! Left the "skins" on, cut the butter down, used a bit less sugar and more cinnamon. (Bake time was about an hour) Instead of orange marmalade, I used Strawberry Polaner for half of them, and left the rest plain. You absolutely must top these with some vanilla ice cream - really upped the experience!

Zesty Broccoli

Reviewed: Feb. 25, 2009
Quick and easy, but only mildly "zesty" - Used about 3.5 cups of broccoli, and 1/2 tsp extra of garlic. The family liked this, but I was expecting a bit more zip.

Tuna Noodle Casserole from Scratch

Reviewed: Feb. 24, 2009
Surprisingly, my normally dinner-avoiding little girl was all about this! I made a few minor adjustments: Less butter overall, omitting the 'shrooms, frozen mixed veggies instead of just peas, skipped the breadcrumbs, Barilla Plus Rotini noodles, and less reduced fat cheese. Dirtied a LOT of dishes, but getting the child to actually eat made it all worth it.

Swedish Meatballs

Reviewed: Feb. 24, 2009
Made a special trip to the store for Evap Milk just so I could give this a try... Made as written, less the addition of garlic and parsley. These were just "alright" - the breadcrumbs could be bumped up to AT LEAST 1/2 cup. The sauce needed something more... Glad I tried 'em, but won't make again.
