About this Cook
My favorite things to cook
I enjoy making big breakfasts and like baking desserts to share with family and friends. I love when friends share their favorite recipes with me and always think of them when I try to recreate their specialties. That's also why I love this site so much, reading the reviews and looking at the comments on the exchange are almost like getting a recommendation (or warning) from a friend.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I like to make tamales, but only when the whole family pitches in to help. I also enjoy making chicken tacos from my husbands family's recipe and my mom's fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy are family favorites. I'm often asked to bring my appetizer meatballs to parties or one of my stand-by desserts.
My cooking triumphs
I like baking desserts, brownies and carrot cakes, especially. My older daughter is a great cook, it seems everything she tries comes out right. My younger daughter likes baking better and especially likes making cupcakes. They both feel they got their start from mom, so that's a great source of pride for me.
My cooking tragedies
I've tried lobster twice and it didn't come out right either time. It's a pretty expensive thing to mess up, so I hesitate to give it another try. I've also had some real disasters trying to cook low calorie recipes, but have had more success tring lower carb cooking. My pie crusts are nothing special, but I've improved and now they're edible.

Old-Fashioned Vanilla Pudding
I really like the pudding but it took forever to get thick. After about 15 minutes I added another 1 tablespoon cornstarch (I had doubled the recipe) and it still didn't get very thick. It did thicken quite a bit after adding egg yolk and I loved the finished pudding. I doubled the recipe and added hot chocolate mix to part of it to make chocolate pudding (I was out of cocoa powder). That turned out good, too.

Alyson's Broccoli Salad
I really liked this. I only had green onions so used that instead of red onion. I may have used a little extra vinegar because I don't like to taste the mayo and thought the amount of sugar was just right. Thanks for the great recipe!

Sirloin Steak with Garlic Butter
I don't usually use this cut of meat, so I needed a recipe because I bought some on sale and didn't know what to do with it. Unfortunately the garlic butter did nothing to tenderize the meat and even though I exactly followed the instructions it was tough. I plan to see if a recipe that calls for marinating the meat helps. The garlic butter whould probably taste ok on a better cut of steak.
