My family LOVES this recipe and requests it at Christmas and Thanksgiving every year. It's not too sweet, and has a great texture.
I've found that I have to double the ingredients to fill a 9 x 13 pan. That way when we cut it in squares, they're a little thicker.
And it's true, you can use canned sweet potatoes, or boil them, or microwave them, and it's still good. But it does get that roasty good flavour when you bake them in the oven. ;)
