Mother's Day Mini Rose
About this Cook
I've been married since I was 18 and luckily cooked a lot as a kid, therefore, I feel I'm pretty experienced. My kids come lurking around the kitchen every time they hear my mixer running!
My favorite things to cook
Cookies are #1 in my house! I also love to try new, extravagant recipes.
My cooking triumphs
My dad raves over my nut roll cookies. They are my grandmother's Yugoslavian recipe, and he says they are better than her's ever were!
My cooking tragedies
I spent about $25 once on ingredients for a multi-berry pie. It looked wonderful and impressive and was also very heavy. I had used a throw-away pie tin, and when I took it out of the oven, it buckled and fell right out of my hands. Scalding hot berries were everywhere!

Sister Schubert's(R) Sloppy Joes
I was pleasantly surprised with this recipe. I was afraid that it would be bland, but made it anyway based off of reviews. I'm glad I did. It was slightly sweet, but tangy as well. I added about five or six drops of hot sauce to give it a little kick. Everyone loved it at my house.

Lemon Square Bars
My kids wanted a sweet snack and asked for cookies. I used the ingredient search tab since I didn't have any brown sugar and wanted to exclude that and stumbled upon this recipe. The only things I did differently were to line my pan with parchment paper and added lemon zest to the filling. Other than that, I followed everything else...ingredients, measurements and time. Very rich tasting!

Soul Smothered Chicken
If you love soul food, you will love this dish. If you are like me, and not so crazy about soul food, you will still like this dish. I made this for my husband for father's day. He is crazy about gravy over fried meat. He said it tasted "good." In his limited use of adjectives, this actually means "outstanding!" The only thing I changed in the recipe was I used red onions instead of yellow. Even though not much dry spice is used, the combination of the celery, onions and garlic, really add a lot of flavor. I also believe browning the chicken in butter instead of oil adds a bit more saltiness to the meat. I had side dishes of lima beans cooked in chicken broth and fried okra. My hubby was in soul food heaven!
