About this Cook
I love to cook and since moving to Canada it has been one of my favorite passtimes. When not cooking I am hiking, reading, playing clarinet or tenor sax or World of Warcraft.
My favorite things to cook
I love baking and cooking in general. Recently I've been mastering bread and learning pies. Since moving so far out on my own I have begun writing all my family recipies so my kids will have them. My grandmother (not the one who made the biscuts and referenced below) was an amazing cook and famous in her town baker. However she like to cook alone, no one was allowed in the kitchen (except my aunt a few times) and most of her recipies from Transalvania went with her to the grave.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Making Lasagna with my mom and grandma in mid Nov. it was an all day event. Some for my dad's b-day, Thanksgiving, X-mas and plently of extras. Holiday meals were lasagna, lamb, turkey, ham and about 10-15 sides with 2 -3 desserts. If grandma hosted the event the biscuts would be served 15-30 minutes after we started to eat once they reaced pitch black and started smoking. She didn't belive in timers. Christmas season at Kathy's while her daughter and I where in high school. We would make so many cookies we had no space to put them inside to cool so we put them outside on table to cool and made sure the light stayed on so the raccons stayed back. We would bake 50+ dozen cookies in a night (2 stoves=4 trays at a time), design trays and package them, then fall asleep watching a movie in the living room with her brother, sister and their friends a few hours past sunrise. Then wake up in the afternoon make dinner and bake more cookies, a cake or two and some loaves of bread.
My cooking triumphs
My first loaf of bread was a huge triumph. Yeast wasn't my thing and it took tons of research with a health dose of trial and error to master it. I've never used a bread machine. My other triump in gerenal is being a good enough cook that I always have requests for my dishes. My husband like to take my dishes to work and show off (and share)them with his co-workers. Also:Loukomathes that reminded my yiayia of her childhood.
My cooking tragedies
Made a chocolate cake with olive oil. Lit a towel on fire- while doing dishes. Burnt wild rice so bad wildlife wouldn't eat it. Oversalting. Using teaspoons instead of tablespoons and vice versa. Not washing dishes. Cooking while on T3 with codine and more loopy than I care to ever be again. Doubting my abilities before even trying a recipe. Was at a dinner party once and was the only person there who knew how to carve a turkey, thanks Dad.

Best Black Beans
Absolutely delisious. Reminds me of the black beans served at Chilli's.

Chocolate Sauce
Good flavor but I also found it too runny. DO NOT add chocolate to thicken this. My husband and I tried to add semisweet baking chocolate and it wasn't the smooth sauce it's supposed to be, it keep small bits of the whole chocolate. Just use less water or try corn syrup. Next time I might make the syrup first (sugar and water) and when that thickens add the cocoa.

Dana's Tropical Fruit Smoothie
I used peach yogurt 'cause that's what I had. Good flavor, nice and creamy. I did use less ice also. 4 not 5 stars 'cause I didn't like the texture from the crushed pinapple too much, next time I think I'll use orange-pineapple juice.
