I don't know what it is, but whenever I see a recipe that claims it's the "Best" of something (like "Best Chocolate-Covered Frog's Legs") it makes me instinctively want to avoid the recipe. I'm big into minimalist naming. A good recipe doesn't need a boastful name.
My favorite things to cook
I bake. It feels like alchemy, really. It's the most like a science experiment... a delicious science experiment. Hands-down my favorite thing to bake is a big ol' batch of cookies. I love to bake bread as well, though that is quite a bit of extra work. When it comes to baking bread, I prefer to do it by hand. It feels like cheating to use a machine. But that is only MY experience. For me baking is a meditative, therapeutic experience. Having an especially tactile connection with my food makes it all the more cathartic when the baking is finally done.
My cooking triumphs
I had tried a beef stew recipe in my Crock Pot, but when the day was done it was clear that the recipe was seriously flawed. It was incredibly runny and bland, except for the overwhelming taste of bay leaves. Neither my boyfriend nor I wanted to eat it, so we ordered a pizza that night. Beef's not exactly dirt-cheap, so I didn't want to let the food go to waste. The next day I took the beef disaster out of the fridge, drained out most of the runny juices, threw it in a large pot over medium heat, dissolved a couple of beef bullion cubes in hot water, then added it to the meat and vegetables. Once it started to heat up, I thickened it with corn starch (dissolved in cold water, of course)and added a few extra seasonings. After a quick taste approval from the boyfriend, I poured it into a pie shell (a secret family recipe!), covered it, and made a beef pot pie that was pretty much amazing.
My cooking tragedies
I have attention deficit disorder. I was making burgers and I completely forgot about them until our smoke alarm reminded me. I was so disappointed. :( I'm super broke, so I can't always afford things like ground beef.
