I am a Canadian by birth but now my home is in Thailand. Generally I cook just for myself, my husband and our baby, but weekly I cook special snacks and desserts for meetings held at our home. I enjoy trying new foods and cooking new things.
My favorite things to cook
I enjoy cooking Thai foods because the ingredients are easiest to find in this country. Now that I have learned from the critics, I think I could not go back to an international-Thai restaurant and be satisfied. I also very much enjoy making desserts, breads, or pasteries.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Being Dutch myself, I enjoy cooking a lot of Dutch recipes. One thing I find about a lot of them is they are usually simple and foolproof!
My cooking triumphs
Moving to Thailand just a year ago, I came without any knowledge of asian cooking. After cooking for just over two months, I often heared comments like "Did you buy this or actually cook it yourself?" Apparently they could not tell the difference. Also I have learned that with the Thai foods, presentation is everything. If it doesn't look pretty, they won't want to eat it. It is actually really enjoyable trying to cook in a way that will look nice when it is finished.
My cooking tragedies
The first time I made a pizza crust I didn't use the yeast properly and it turned out flat and as hard as a rock. I think we just ate the toppings that time.
