About this Cook
I am an older woman who has been cooking since collage. I am very glad to have finally found a resource to connect with other home cooks. Being the "cooking lady" for my family, I enjoy easy recipes that even my picky eaters will enjoy, but when it's just me, I like to go gourmet!
My favorite things to cook
I enjoy any type of dessert and also bake organic breads and cookies to maintain my family's healthy lifestyle. In my older days, I'm watching my carb intake but still love to splurge a little and make some gourmet creations!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother used to enjoy baking a holiday fruitcake and I grew up eating the fruity dessert every Christmas. Now, with a family of my own, I'm the only fruitcake lover in the house. Still, every Christmas, I make sure to bake a fruitcake, simply to carry on the tradition! Maybe later, everyone will learn to enjoy my fruitcakes and stop complaining!
My cooking triumphs
In my younger days, my friend from collage urged me to decorate her wedding cake. I was really unsure about the whole thing and thought it would be a total disaster. I took on the responsibility anyway and after staying up past midnight to finish it, I was satisfied with my work! My friend was really pleased and everyone at the wedding commented on how good a job the decorater had done. I was really pleased, that was the first cake I had decorated that actully was impressive!
My cooking tragedies
One Thanksgiving, my mother claimed she would bring a Turkey for the celebration. When she got to my house, there wasn't a turkey in sight. She said that the local market was sold out of our main corse! I was really angry she had waited until the last minute and ended up going to get one myself. Finally I found a bird, but in my haste, I accidentally bought a chicken. It wasn't even near enough for the whole family. We had to break into the sliced deli turkey. Maybe everyone would have been better without the turkey all along!

Walnut-Date Pumpkin Pie
My mouth is watering right now as I recall how tasty this pie was! I just loved the walnut and date combination, and the pumpkin flavor lightened up the heavy walnuts and dates perfectly. I used oat-flour dates, dates coated in a thin layer of oat flour, which are bettter for baking, I have found (available at your local health food store), and stewed the pumpkin myself. My family has been urging me to try stewing my owm pumpkin, so this year, I gave in. Really, stewing a pumpkin is quite simple, although it is an all day project, and I found the pie to taste much better then the ones I usually make with the simple Libby's pie filling you buy at the grocery store. I coated the walnuts I used for garnish with honey, and cinnamon, but besides that, the recipe was great how it was. Thanks!

Pumpkin Ice Cream Pie
My little girls started gagging as soon as they heard about pumpkin ice cream, and I was almost sure that this was going to be another one of those recipes that souds strange and tastes worse, like the lobster ice cream my daugters refused last year in Bar Harbor! I still wanted to make it though, just to see what this tasted like, and I sure was plesantly suprised! The ice cream tastes like a cross between cinnamon and something I've neever had before! I absolutely loved this, and I garnished the pie with caramel sauce and walnuts. If you like pumpkin pie, and cinnamon ice cream, I'm sure you will love this recipe! However, this is deffinitely a unique recipe and for those of you who don't, I might steer clear of this! Thanks for sharing!

Maple Sugar Pumpkin Pie
I know what everyone is thinking: "A maple syrup pie? That sounds really strange... should I really bake it?" Actully, YES! Even though maple syrup and pumpkin sound like a strange combination of ingredients, they really go together and create a winning pie. My husband, who claims he only likes pumpkin pie from the town bakery, which we've been ordering from for over 10 years, told me that this pie tops anything he's ever eaten before! Please try this recipe, and I promise it won't let you down! Juts one suggestion, however. Use real maple syrup or you will really taste a difference. If you don't use real syrup, don't blame a bad taste on the recipe! Thank you!
