Another beautiful, warm winter day in the Motor City so my cousin and I headed downtown for some fun.   First we had lunch at Traffic Jam, one of Detroit's most famous restaurants.  It's a micro-brewery, bakery and dairy all in one.   Famous for their burgers… MORE

About this Cook
I'm a vegetarian married to a meat eater who also enjoys cooking. I've become very adept at side dishes, particularly comfort foods that my husband and I both enjoy. I love to read cookbooks and watch movies about cooking (i.e. Big Night) and it seems I never get to spend enough time in the kitchen. Email: knancyhoo@yahoo.com
My favorite things to cook
Desserts, breads, potatoes, soup. Nothing too gourmet. I really enjoy preparing fresh dishes from scratch that we'll both enjoy.
My favorite family cooking traditions
"Helping" my mom in the kitchen when I was a kid. My job was to run the nuts through the hand cranked nut grinder, sift the powdered sugar, fold the wire slicer over the hard-boiled eggs or make little cinammon sugar treats out of the pie crust scraps. Little things, but very memorable for me.
My cooking triumphs
I've perfected my homemade caramels and every holiday I make close to a thousand to give away to friends and relatives. Just recently, I succeeded at a batch of homemade veggie burgers. It took me three tries to get the Cook's Illustrated recipe right and it was definately worth it!
My cooking tragedies
Pie Crust! I am the daughter of a pie crust goddess. I look like her, I sound like her, but I can't make pie crust like her. What a pity!

Spicy Roasted Edamame
Based on the "oily" warnings from the other reviewers, I sprayed the beans with a couple of squirts of Pam Olive Oil. No oily residue at all! I loved the spice combination. I also left out the basil added garlic powder and a pinch of kosher salt.

Tomato Cucumber Salad
Fresh, light and delicious. Instead of salt, I used Trader Joe's salt-free seasoning.

Deviled Eggs
I followed everyones's advice and scaled back on the salt and the eggs turned out really delicious. I will keep this as my standard Deviled Egg recipe. Thanks everyone for sharing your tips.
