My favorite family cooking traditions
My parents started a tradition that my two brothers and I have kept since leaving home. On Christmas Eve, we all make our own pizzas and milkshakes for dinner. The pizza dough has “evolved” over the years from making our own dough, to store-bought dough mixes, to Boboli, and, in my house, it is now back to being made from scratch but now in a bread machine (we use the Amazing Whole Wheat Pizza dough from this site). We put out a variety of toppings so everyone gets to make it the way they want it. While the pizzas are baking, someone mans the blender and whips up custom milkshakes for everyone. The tradition is so much fun that our friend now love to join us for Christmas Eve!
My cooking tragedies
When I was a teenager, I decided to help Mom with the holiday cooking, so I made pumpkin bread. As I was adding ingredients, I added the baking soda, then scanned the list, saw baking powder next, decided I had already added that, and went on. Needless to say, the bread turned out VERY dense though it still tasted fine. My family dubbed it “pumpkin brick.”
