Grandmas Chicken Chardon

Reviewed: Jan. 23, 2012
This is similar to a recipe that came out in the early 80's when I was a new bride & became a favorite...no need for the egg, just dip the chicken in melted butter, roll in crumbs of your choice with the added parmesan & garlic. I put the chicken in the crock pot while I was working, when I got home added chopped green onions & 1 cup white wine (or apple juice can be substituted, although I never did, so I can't vouch on the taste) I let it cook until I made the rice....which was the Campbells cream of chicken, can of water & a can of instant rice....which was ready in a few minutes......the chicken was always delicious, tender & the sauce over the rice was incredible.....a keeper even after all these years...,,try it..........

I have been making a version of this for 35 yrs..mine calls for 2-8oz cream cheese, 2 cans cresent rolls, 3/4 cup sugar, 1 tsp vanilla , 1 egg.....sprinkle sugar on top layer before baking, no melter butter is needed...this was one of the first recipes I got from a co-worker at my 1st job....we all loved it..

Cream Cheese Penguins

Reviewed: Jan. 18, 2012
I have been making these for 5 yrs & am amazed at the reactions I get. I make a shrimp tree & place the penguins around the bottom..this is my most requested thing to bring....Yes, they are time consuming, but I have finally got it down.... Had some friends over & I showed them how to do it...I use a 16" disposable decorating bag without a tip, just cut the plastic to a comfortable size that works for you... Buy 1 can small olives & 1 can JUMBO...have everything at room temp,( I have mixed the cream cheese with ranch - for variety) I like to have a thick carrot base -about 1/2" ,after cutting out the pie shaped beak, I make that thinner, outerwise it will split the small olive head... Just put the softened cream cheese in the bag & pipe it into the body, add the head, put the toothpick thru both olives & press into the feet,,,you are done...people are so impressed & this is always a Hit!!!!

Pumpkin French Toast Bake

Reviewed: Dec. 8, 2011
I hate it when people change the recipe & review it, but I am guilty for that....I thought 1 loaf of Texas toast would be too much for 3 of us, so I used about 3/4 of the loaf with crusts cut off, used 6 eggs, 1/2 cup of milk (it seemed too thick) & added 1/4 cup of sugar (I was afraid it wouldn't be sweet enough) For the topping, I used a packet of Cinnamon Roll instant oatmeal with 1/3 cup brown sugar and 2 tbl. of butter.....after reading about the messy cleanup others had, I used a disposable pan ( I hate sticky messes & the 50 cent pan is worth my time) baked it for 39 minutes.... This is a KEEPER....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We put maple syrup on it & WOW!!!! My daughter finished it off, and she is on a diet, so this was incredible. I am making it again this Sunday, but will make the entire loaf of bread......Thanks for an excellent recipe, that I changed to suit our tastes...........

Pierogi Casserole

Reviewed: Nov. 5, 2011
This is not a lot of trouble to make as one reader stated if you are using up leftovers......whenever I make lasagna I boil the entire box, and freeze the remaining noodles....then when I have leftover cream cheese-garlic mashed potatoes I make pierogi casserole......my family likes it this way: Dice an onion & cook in butter until softened. Pour a little on bottom of your casserole pan, then layer noodles, potatoes, butter-onion & sliced Velveeta...we like Velveeta better than cheddar....keep making layers & bake in oven or it microwaves nicely.........this is a good dish when you are needing comfort food.....

Johnny Cake

Reviewed: Oct. 3, 2009
This is excellent..I love cornbread, and was looking for one that was not gritty...this is a KEEPER....its in my cookbook & will be the one I always use...I baked it in a round ceramic pie pan & it took about 30 minutes, unlike the other cornbread recipes I have tried, this was not burnt around the edges & uncooked in the very middle, it was excellent with just butter....thanks for sharing.....

Easter Lamb Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 3, 2009
I think she has a good idea...I worked at a bakery, I make wedding cakes & special cakes in my home, so I am a very experienced baker....but I have yet to have a lamb cake come out that is perfect...its either underbaked or overbaked, or its too dark around the edges & my family won't eat it...this year I am baking the 2 halves & the pan I have does not have any steam holes in it...so I am baking chocolate in one side & white on the other...will put the 2 halves together with chocolate canned frosting, then use my own buttercream frosting......for all of you that have good luck with baking the 2 halves together....good for you !!! but for those of us that have trouble, this is a very creative way to do it.....

Raspberry Oatmeal Bars

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2009
This was my "new" cookie recipe for Christmas baking..I made them with white cake mix & raspberry seedless jam & with seedless strawberry, seedless blackberry & apricot...they are delicious...even my 87 yr old mom, says they are delicious. Thank you for such an easy recipe. I had my doubts, whenever I use a cake mix for something other than a cake, it never tastes that great, but this is the exception....

Sky High Yorkshire Pudding

I did what others said & added salt. I put oil in the muffin cups like the recipe stated, milk & eggs were room temp. but all of mine stuck, very badly....no one cared for this, they said it was too chewy. The ones my mom used to make were crispier, more of a hollow center..

Bacon for the Family or a Crowd

Reviewed: Dec. 29, 2008
One Sunday while baking frozen biscuits the biscuits needed 25 minutes,I decided to put the bacon in the oven I used an ex-large cookie sheet with sides & lined it with parchment. It took 25-30 minuts at 375deg to bake, we like ours extra crispy. I did turn the bacon after removing the biscuits, but sometimes I just leave it...this is much easier than cooking it in the microwave...

Blue Ribbon Sugar Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 5, 2008
I am a very experienced baker of 40+ years. I have been making this recipe for many years, but mine did not call for lemon extract, I only use vanilla & you can substiture margarine (make sure it is MARGARINE, a lot of them are now "Vegetable Spread" ) but if you do substitue, make sure they will be eaten within a day...best make with butter...I put my dough in a pastry bag & squeeze out in a mound & flatten with a glass dipped in suger, very fast...this is also excellent with added Holiday M&M's...always disappears at the school bake sales.....

Day Before Mashed Potatoes

Reviewed: Sep. 12, 2008
This is similiar what I make & its always a hit. I only use red potatoes, they have the best flavor. I use 8oz of cream cheese, leave out the added salt, since the cream cheese & sourcream already have salt in them. I add about 1/2 to 1 tsp garlic powder & about 2 TB of chives...add some butter on top & bake, we always have this for all the holidays...

Russian Tea Cakes I

Reviewed: Dec. 10, 2006
These are very good, I make them for the school bake sale, & they were the first to sell. For those of you having problems with the dryness, humidity in the house could be causing the problem. Make sure the butter is very soft, if its still dry, add a TBL of water, I learned that in Home Ec, years ago.
