Heavenly White Cake

Reviewed: Nov. 19, 2010
really good cake, it was a bit dense (but I like a slightly denser cake) but also moist. I saw that other people said to add an extra 1/2 cup of milk, but I decided to add 1/2 cup of amaretto into the batter. Tasted amazing! Made a nice layer cake out of it with chocolate icing. Would definitely make again!

Honey Wheat Bread III

Reviewed: Sep. 22, 2010
this bread ws really good, but not exactly what I was looking for. I did not have problems with this bread rising, or with it being dense either like other people did. Fresh yeast is really important. It did not take all the flour, so I'm wondering if some people are adding more flour than is needed. I prefer a slightly sweeter bread when I make it and this was bread-bread, meaning it would be really good for sandwiches and such. I baked it for the 35min and it was baked all the way through.

Vanilla Crepes

Reviewed: May 13, 2010
this was the first crepe recipe I used and it was pretty good. The crepes came out a little thicker so I think I'll thin it out a bit next time, but otherwise they tasted great! I made 1/3 of the recipe and got 4 mini crepes (I used a small frying pan) and I used the sauteed apples recipe from this site for the filling. A little sprinkling of icing sugar and these were fantastic! I will be making them again.

Strawberry Cinnamon Oatmeal Muffins

Reviewed: Mar. 26, 2010
I used this as a base for the random ingredients I had in my house that i wanted to use up. I used honey instead of sugar, added half oats half bran, and some coconut. I also double the cinnamon and added vanilla like others suggested. I made these into mini muffins and baked for 12 minutes at 375.... yum!

Citrus Chicken and Rice

Reviewed: Mar. 3, 2010
quite bland... I added chili powder, garlic powder (fresh would be better but I had none on hand), soya sauce and some hoison sauce. I used tofu instead too and I sauteed it with stock and soya sauce before adding it to the rice. I also added veggies to make it more complete.

Sweet Potato and Carrot Soup with Cardamom

Reviewed: Jan. 31, 2010
I only put this as 4/5 because I made some changes out of necessity cause I didn't have everything. I used half an onion, only one sweet potato, and I used curry instead of tumeric in the spices and it still turned out great! I can't wait for lunch tomorrow!

Lighter Banana Muffins

Reviewed: Nov. 10, 2009
this is a very good recipe. I only give it four stars cause I had to follow some of the modifications other people used. I cut the sugar back to half a cup, added cinnamon and vanilla, used four bananas and added a couple tablespoons of milk. It baked for 20 minutes. I would make this again :)

Grandmother's Buttermilk Cornbread

Reviewed: Aug. 12, 2009
This was my first time making cornbread and this is a great recipe. I followed it exactly and had no problems. I did have to make my own buttermilk by adding 1 tbsp of lemon juice to 1 cup of milk and leaving it for 5 minutes. I made them into muffins for a bbq and just reduced the time to 17 minutes. And incase you're wondering, 1/4 pound of butter = 1/2 cup or one block. Enjoy!

Iced Tea II

Reviewed: Aug. 11, 2009
I've made this iced tea twice so far and I don't think I'll be having iced tea any other way. I did make a few modifications from other's suggestions. I only put 1/2 cup of sugar, about 1/4 of lemon juice and I put 5 tea bags for 30min. I added the lemon juice and sugar after the water boiled so everything would dissolve easily. I think I might add a fruit tea bag next time to try something new.

Vegan Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 4, 2009
this recipe turned out great! I only gave this recipe four stars because I had to up the cocoa powder to 1/3 of a cup. I'm not vegan, so I drizzled buttercream frosting on it which made it look really nice. I baked this in a loaf pan and it only took about 40 minutes. I made this for friends when I had no eggs on hand. This is a keeper.

Boiled Bagels

Reviewed: Apr. 3, 2009
amazing!!! this is the first time I've ever made bagels, and I was debating between trying this recipe or another one but decided to go with this one. I'm glad I did. I made half a recipe to be on the safe side. I used whole wheat and white flour. I ended up not using all of the flour, about half a cup less. As per the suggestions of other reviewers, I let it rise for 30 minutes, added brown sugar to the water (I had no molasses) and only boiled them for a minute each side. I made 7 out of the dough, so they were smaller, and it took about 15 minutes to bake. I loved them! I can't wait to make them again and try variations now that I know it works. I should also add that cause mine were smaller, I didn't have the problem of them cooking all the way through. And cause of the difficulty of them sticking to the pan like other people, I sprayed the pan with olive oil spray and sprinkled flour on it. I had no problem with sticking at all.

Stovetop Granola

Reviewed: Dec. 2, 2008
amazing! I all of a sudden had this urge to have granola cause I wanted a snack and all I have is popcorn but it's too late to go out and buy any so I decided to make it. So to tell you the truth, I didn't measure anything but here's what I did. I used oats, coconut, puffed cereal (Kashi which tastes horrible on it's own so I am thankful i have a use for it), and as other people did, I used maple syrup instead of honey, and added cinnamon and vanilla. I also cut back on the butter and sugar like other people said. I am putting it in the oven to dry out a little but I couldn't help myself from eating it off the pan. I am making this again!! I made this a second time and I forgot to let my butter/sugar/syrup mixture bubble a bit (as the above poster after me said to do) and it didn't clump as well so make sure you do it!

Gnocchi I

Reviewed: Nov. 28, 2008
I used this recipe as my guideline for making spinach gnocchi. I wanted to use up a potato and some spinach that I had lying around and it turned out great! I cooked the spinach down and put it in the food processor (probably 1/4 cup) and I added some of the potato to that to help it blend. Then I mixed in most of one small egg, and probably 3/4 of flour since it was a small potato. I paired it with my homemade roasted garlic cream sauce and it's a winner! for the sauce I used milk, a bit of butter, flour to thicken, parmesean cheese, chili flakes, sundried tomatoes and a whole roasted garlic.

Mall Pretzels

Reviewed: Nov. 26, 2008
this was my first time making pretzels and first time using yeast ever. I gotta say, these turned out yummy! I made them a much smaller size for a potluck, so I halfed the recipe and it made 14, and I set the oven at 375 and baked them for 6-7 minutes. I ate a couple already and I am thinking about making the other half of the recipe so I will actually have enough for tomorrow. I also only used all-purpose flour, and I just sprayed my cookie sheets with olive oil spray instead of using parchment paper and i had no problems

Chocolate Chai

Reviewed: Nov. 17, 2008
pretty good! I agree that the amount of cocoa should be reduced a bit. I ended up using 2 teaspoons of cocoa instead of tablespoon without realizing that i read it wrong, and that was still a good amount of chocolate. I added more tea and less milk and its quite yummy. I shall be making this again!

Snickerdoodles III

Reviewed: Aug. 5, 2008
I had attempted a different snickerdoodle recipe last year that I received from a coworker and it bombed big time. Since then, I have been on the hunt for a decent recipe and so far, this one is pretty good. I unfortunately couldn't locate my cream of tartar, so after googling, I substituted baking powder for both the cream of tartar and baking soda. I baked these at 350 degrees for 11 minutes and they came out soft and chewey. A few days later and they're still soft. I did add more vanilla to the batter, I didn't measure so approximately another teaspoon. I would make these again :)

Red Velvet Cake I

Reviewed: Apr. 10, 2008
following other's leads, I used the 1 cup of oil instead of shortening, 2 cups of sugar, and used 5 tbsp of cocoa powder. This is the first cake I've made, and it turned out really good. This was a trial run for a cake I'm making in a few weeks, and since I didn't have food colouring I didn't put it in, but for the real one I will. I also made my own buttermilk by using one cup of milk and 1 tbsp of vinegar and letting it sit for about 5 minutes. It took 35min to bake, and the edges were a bit crispy but I cut those off and ate them myself haha. I made buttercream frosting, but next time I make it I'll be using cream cheese frosting, I was too lazy to go out and buy the cream cheese this time. I don't have much experience with red velvet cakes so I can't say how it compares, but I like it!

The Right Choice Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Apr. 1, 2008
I already have a really great chocolate chip cookie recipe, but cause of the amount of butter you can only really eat a couple at a time. So I needed a good recipe that only required 1/2 cup of butter, without the rest of the ingredients being cut by half either. This one fit the bill! I used margarine instead of shortening, and I was a bit worried cause the batter tasted floury, but they turned out really good! I think I'll be keeping this recipe. I also used vanilla instead of the coconut extract. Actually, I find that these cookies taste exactly like the ones I used to make as a kid but the recipe book has been lost for a few years, so I really will be keeping this recipe!

Big Soft Ginger Cookies

Reviewed: Feb. 4, 2008
this is my first time making this recipe, or any ginger cookie... it's my first time working with molasses too and I had no idea how much it smelled, but you know, it's worth it! I'm making them as we speak, I have a batch in the oven. I followed the recipe exactly, and I put them in for only 8 minutes as other people said and they turn out amazing! The dough wasn't sticky, but I did find it a bit soft so I put it in the fridge and boy do they taste great :) They look exactly like the picture too which I absolutely loved. I'll be making this one again in no time. Next time I'll try with the orange juice instead of water as I forgot to do that this time.

Jalapeno Hummus

Reviewed: Dec. 14, 2007
This turned out AMAZING! Being my first hummus attempt I was a little worried but it was fantastic. I used a jar of jalapenos as I was a bit lazy to get fresh, I had no tahini so I left it out and leaving it overnight in the fridge is the best thing you could do. I made this for my friends and they went nuts over it... it was declared the best hummus ever, so much in fact that my friend took it off the table and kept it by him. I shall make this again and again :)
