I am a high school student from Southern Canada, hoping her cooking skills go from impossibly bad to better! I used to burn everything I made -even water somehow-, but am improving every day! My family, boyfriend and friends are my voluntary guinea pigs, and are willing to try my cooking, asking me to make things for them all the time. Some turn out to be successes, some...not so much. None of them have been sick off of my cooking just yet thank goodness, but I realize trial and error is all part of the cooking experience.
My favorite things to cook
Anything with fish or seafood...my family is from Newfoundland, so I guess it's in the blood. Pasta is another favourite, though.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Anything and everything. The old Christmases before my aunt and uncle divorced were the best, a combination of traditional Canadian/American and Ukrainian food. It was a little odd to see borscht and turkey on the same table, but it was still delicious.
My cooking triumphs
Crunchy spinach dip. The recipe is in one of my cookbooks, and let me tell you it's actually foolproof! Add in a hollowed pumpernickel loaf and I was good to go.
My cooking tragedies
There have been so many, although the funniest one had to be helping my mom bake cupcakes when I was little. She used to make them for everything: Christmas, Halloween, my birthday, and I'd bring them into school. Somehow, when I tried to make my own on that stormy afternoon, my cupcake ended up collapsing inside the pan...one of my first incidents with using yeast when baking. Oops!
