I grew up in a small farming community, got married to my high school sweetheart and graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in education. After teaching for several years while my husband got his masters, we moved with two children to South Korea. Six years and two more children later, we moved to Istanbul, Turkey, where we lived for 10 years. We returned to the States in 2006.
My favorite things to cook
While living overseas, it was fun to try and figure out how to make familiar food with unfamiliar ingredients, especially in Korea since their food was so different from what I was used to. Main dishes are my specialty and I love anything that has a sauce on it! I also love trying gourmet foods. I am all about presentation!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Breakfast is a favorite with my teenagers and I always cook them a hot one no matter what time they have to leave for school or day of the week. This is my little way of saying, "Your momma loves you!" What kid won't be inspired to slay his dragons every day with a full belly of good food in his tummy in the morning?
My cooking triumphs
Anything I made overseas that tasted like it does at home! Most notably, the first time I made taco salad, I had to make EVERYTHING from scratch; chips, 1000 Island dressing, taco seasoning, etc! I fed it to a group of 10 students visiting from America. They loved it, especially since they hadn't had familiar food for weeks.
My cooking tragedies
One time I made a mistake while making biscuits and used baking soda instead of baking powder! I didn't notice it until I took a bite out of one. The sad thing was that our guest was helping himself to a second and they tasted just awful!
