I have 3 wonderful boys and a great husband. I love spending time with my family, cooking, eating (LOL!) gardening, baking (yes, it's a different animal than regular cooking.) I cook at an assisted living facility, so I'm always on the lookout for good recipes that feed a crowd, as well as family favorites. I love that allrecipes lets you scale up or down according to your needs.I also collect cookbooks and actually read them like novels. You get alot of ideas that way, plus some have anecdotes and stories about the cook or where the recipe came from.
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake, always from scratch, and I love frying chicken or chicken-fried steak. All kinds of pies. There's so much else, but those are my favorites.I also love authentic ethnic or regional foods. I like the idea of eating a dish the way someone in Greece, India, Korea, China, or even New Orleans and (one of my favorites, being my hometown) Chicago, has it prepared. Then I might tweak it to make it better to my own tastes. I love cooking with pantry staples. I like to see how many wonderful things I can make with things I already have on hand. I have gotten into a more healthy way of cooking and eating lately, gradually changing my whole family's diet as well. I have found that you can still eat the sinfully rich things that you love, in moderation, and that healthy food can taste wonderful too!
My favorite family cooking traditions
It's hard to name a favorite, because my whole life has always revolved around food. I can't name a gathering, holiday or event that was not centered around food.
My cooking triumphs
There are so many. I used to think that learning to fry chicken was my favorite accomplisment, and before that, baking with yeast, but now, I think any new recipe that gets a smile from my family is a great accomplishment.
My cooking tragedies
I can't make cornbread without a recipe. The one time I tried to "eyeball" it and throw in "this and that", we had 60 guests and it was a huge flop! I'll never make it without a recipe again, LOL! (Specifically Grandma's Buttermilk Cornbread, from this site)
