It's common knowledge that when things get old, they tend to go bad. Some spoil and some just, well, they go bad. Such is the case with me! I am certainly NOT spoiled (points for saying that with a straight face...)but parts of me are surely going bad. Therefore, I got an early Christmas… MORE

Food! What a topic to write about. I hope this doesn't cause anyone to lose their appetite. It's that time of year again and as I rock back on my porch and reminisce, it makes me think of the many pumpkin pies I have known, and how they have affected my life. Lets take a little trip down memory… MORE

I spent most of my life at the barn, working horses, cleaning stalls and all the rest of the perks that go with that line of work. My typical "uniform' was a t-shirt or sweatshirt (depending on the weather), a pair of jeans and hair wadded up inside a ballcap. Occasionally, that might include a… MORE

Many, many years ago, too many to confess to, I was driving down the mountain road from the family ranch, into the little town of Tehachapi. As I came around a corner, to my horror, there on the ground in front of me, blocking my lane, was a TARANTULA!!I may as well clue the reader, here, that… MORE

Living in our old house in S California, the weather usually was fairly temperate in the early fall, so we often slept with the doors to the back yard open. Cider, (our red-headed stepchild, a Golden Retriever) was still a large puppy that particular year. He slept on the bed with us, and… MORE

We moved to the ranch we currently live and work on, almost 4 years ago. After making several trips from CA with our truck and horse trailer full of goodies, we crammed it all into the tiny 100 yr old "cook house" which will be our humble abode and Home Sweet Home for years to come.Aside from… MORE

In an effort to refrain from anymore continuing...which is becoming a nasty habit, I would like to post this as a warning...this entry might be rather long.Okay...so we had to plan a wedding. We agreed this was best executed at our family ranch, which is where we were moving anyway, as no one… MORE

After Randyman's metamorphosis and our trip to the family Christmas party in palm springs, he became a regular visitor. There were times he was lauded as a hero, such as the incident when he rescued my Down pillow, "Fluffy", whom I found suspended from the ceiling fan where the boys had fitted… MORE

Due to the severity of a freak snowstorm, HandyRandyman spent a week on our couch, and there were no fatalities. As vehicles and other mechanical units continued their struggle for operational survival, he took meals with us and watched the two TV stations we actually got. It was during this… MORE

After he repaired my tractor, I learned that Randyman aka 'The Axe Murderer' had been summoned via the local feedstore...again! Their excuse for this was:"It wasn't at your house, it wasn't a delivery, and he fixes heavy equipment."So, I offered them my next problem...how was I supposed to pay… MORE

About Me
Kids are raised, we are hands on a 250,000 acre working cattle ranch 110 miles from town, so we raise a lot of our own food, vegetables, fruits, milk, eggs and meat. Love riding everyday and working cattle, but still spend a lot of time in the kitchen, and the garden.
My favorite things to cook
Breads, coffeecakes, all forms of chicken, shish ke bobs...and soups, I love homemade soup and bread!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Homemade from scratch...anything! All traditions are sort of gone by the wayside, as we live so far from family now
My cooking triumphs
Most things from this site, this has been the best thing the internet has had to offer!
My cooking tragedies
A layered Jello dessert...the middle layer never set, so it did the 'ooze-wiggle'...and...well..I liquified a couple of chickens on 2 different occasions, turning them into a black gel. Moral of that story is, don't start cooking then go clean barns!...and there was the time that my kids were helping me make Thanksgiving dinner and SOMEbody (who resembled my youngest son) forgot to put the sugar in the pie!!!
