About this Cook
I'm in my early 30s and spend most of my time caring for my family and home. When the weather is nice, I'm usually outside doing yardwork; my daughter would tell you, "Mommy loves to pull weeds!" For other fun I teach yoga, swim lessons, and water aerobics. My daughers who are 3 and 6 love to help in the kitchen. I'm vegetarian and am always looking for new recipes that will delight my family. My best friend's mom is my inspiration; a true artist, everything she makes is beautiful as well as delicious: she says her husband won't eat it if it doesn't look good!
My favorite things to cook
I love to make pizza. I'm nervous about what to cook for meatlovers, but they always love my pizza. I love to make salads: green, pasta and fruit. I also enjoy baking cookies and bread. I wish I could bake cookies more often, but I don't know anyone who is in need of the extra calories (certainly not me!) so I try to limit my baking to special occasions. I like to try new recipes, and I don't yet have very many recipes that I keep in rotation. Sometimes, I forget which recipes I've tried, even if my family loved them, but writing recipe reviews or taking pictures of the food helps, otherwise I'd have forgotten what I've made. Popcorn is my favorite food, so much so that I once dressed up as Orville Redenbacher for Halloween. I make mine the old-fashioned delicious way: in a pot on the stove.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Making houska (Czech bread) at Christmas. Once while visiting my aunt for the holidays, we got snowed in by 5 feet of snow.... we couldn't leave the house and the airport was closed.... we occupied ourselves by baking hoska all day (for three days) until the roads were cleared - we never got tired of eating it. My grandma is of Pennsylvania Dutch heritage and she makes the most beautiful breads effortlessly.... I'm still aspiring to that! She also used to cook huge lunches for all of the farmhands during harvest season, wow!
My cooking triumphs
Anytime I make something that my family raves about and asks for me to make again is a triumph. I wow myself if the main dish and the accessory dishes are timed to be done and on the table at the same time My husband nearly turns cartwheels if dinner is ready when he gets home from work.
My cooking tragedies
I feel like I'll never truly perfect my cooking skills because there is always something new to learn and room to improve. Most of the time I feel like a kid experimenting in the kitchen, but looking back, I have learned so much. My mom still bemoans the time I tried to boil water in the mircrowave in her stainless steel pot - I was 9 and trying to make mac & cheese - I had failed to notice that macaroni was usually cooked on the stove - the microwave survived, but we had to buy a new handle for the pot.

Whole Wheat Beer Bread
I cannot rave enough about this bread, it is DELICIOUS and a cinch to make! The bread has a lovely sweet flavor. I used Blue Moon's "Honey Moon Summer Ale". My only change to the recipe was to use half the salt. The texture of this bread is terrific, but I think adding a little bit of oatmeal would be a good thing. Thank you!

Mexican Rice III
Good mexican rice. Not exactly what I was looking for, but still good. My daughter likes the rice at our local resturant, but she doesn't like chunks of veggies in it - maybe next time I'll try it with onion and garlic powders and tomato sauce. I used veggie broth and no peppers.

Honey Oatmeal Bread II
This bread tastes awesome. I made some modifications based on previous reviews, and I will need to play around with the recipe a little more. I let the oatmeal soak for longer than an hour and added the yeast directly to it (omitted the 1/2 cup of water) and had to add about 1 cup more flour as it was very wet still. I subbed in one cup of ww flour. I didn't have enough honey so had to add some corn syrup. I also replace one T butter with oil. It took an extra long time for the first rise; next time I will add an extra tsp of yeast. My kids loved this bread.
