I'm an architecture student at the University of Michigan going after my Masters Degree. I'm an avid baseball fan. My interest in cooking stems from my yearning to know how things (buildings, gadgets, etc) are made as well how to make them look damn good while I'm at it. Good Design + Knowing How Things Are Made = Good Cooking. I'm not interested in how to make a pretty cake, but more so why the cake consistency is the way it is and how I can control that. With that said, I love to read a lot about the science of cooking... Molecular Gastronomy!
My favorite things to cook
well... i generally enjoy things that are heavily dependent upon process and organization. I like chopping things and arranging them neatly on a plate until I'm ready for them. I'd also have to say that cooking breakfast on a Saturday morning (is 12 noon still morning?) is a pretty satisfying thing to do as well.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My favorite thing to make by far is pirogies. Being the son of a Ukrainian immigrant, polish/ukrainian food has been a huge part of my life since the day I was born. My grandmother made them, my mother made them, and I have taken it upon myself to continue the tradition. I make the original pirogies with completely traditional fillings completely from scratch using all of those little tricks that only grandmothers know about.
My cooking triumphs
for the ungodly amount of unhealthy things I have tried cooking... i am still not fat.
My cooking tragedies
I have set the kitchen on fire twice.... more to come on this.
