Married for 30+ years. Our grown son is 21 years old and still living at home. I don't do a lot of cooking - and I'm definitely not into a "production" kitchen...I like to cook when I have time to enjoy it. Since I deal with food allergies - especially gluten, meal planning can be difficult. I tend do soup a lot for myself...sometimes the family will go for it, and sometimes, they just end up going out. I use my freezer a lot by buying ahead when family favorites are on sale.
My favorite things to cook
(Gluten Free): Shrimp and Octopus Soup (Caldo de Camaron y Pulpo), Nachos, Be Prepared Five-Bean Soup Mix, Broccoli Salad I, Chicken Tortilla Soup V, Harvest Rice Dish, Hearty Lentil Soup, Rice - Black Bean & Feta Salad, and The Best Mashed Potatoes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mom was a great cook - she did it all. She made yogurt, baked bread, and canned every year everything that came out of our garden. Christmas holidays were awesome. Everyone knew her for her pie crusts, cakes and cookies...but I hardly have any of my mom's favorite recipes - so I've used the Allrecipes site to locate those recipes that I loved growing up - summer salads, holiday dishes, kolaches, goulash, stuffed grape leaves, oxtail soup, and oyster stew.
My cooking triumphs
Since I've been a member since 2000, I have a lot of triumphs... Prior to the gluten-free recipes, my "triumphs" were: Tofu Lasagna, Mushroom Risotto, Ukrainian Meat Filled Cabbage Rolls, Orzo and Tomato Salad with Feta Cheese, Mary's Roasted Red Pepper Dip, Catherine's Spicy Chicken Soup
Favorite Sweets: Impossible Pumpkin Pie, Cinnamon Ice Cream, Rhubarb Strawberry Crunch, Cranberry Pistachio Biscotti, Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins, Chocolate Yule Log, Chocolate Sandwich Cookies II, Mrs. Sigg's Snickerdoodles;
My cooking tragedies
Since I experiment a lot, I also get in trouble. The worst was when I burned the rice in the microwave, and ended up having to put the smoking pot outside my kitchen door!
