About this Cook
I've been married for 37 years. Two adult sons and 3 grandkids. I am a Master teacher for an intercity school district and close to retirement. I love to travel; have traveled 49 of the 50 states (still need to get to Alaska), Canada, Mexico, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and Ireland. I love cats, dogs (bully breeds especially), cooking, of course, herb gardening, orchids and cross country motorcycle travel.
My favorite things to cook
Pasta and anything with fresh herbs. Grill outdoors or fish on my George Foreman grill. Spicy or ethnic foods.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My son, Mike, and I cook together. He's always trying to add something extra to my recipes and I comment "It's not rocket science." We love to cook mac & cheese (chunky, baked) together and eat the buttered mac together after salt and pepper have been added but before the cheese goes in. It's a recipe I had to learn early on because my husband's mother made it that way. He also helps me with the holiday turkey dinner with his specialty being the mashed potatoes and gravy (our family eats lots with gravy).
My cooking triumphs
Recreating dishes my favorite restaurants took off their menu or changed using cheaper or processed ingredients. Penne pasta in a red pepper cream suace w/bistecca steak, Max & Erma's spicy chicken tenders (made with cracker crumbs).
My cooking tragedies
When I was first married, I honeymooned at my husband's aunt's home in Florida. I was trying to impress her and offered to cook spaghetti for the 4 of us. I came from a family of 9 kids and 2 parents so when we cooked spaghetti, we cooked a lot of it. Well, suffice it to say, she had spaghetti for a real long time after we left.
