The weather widget on my Mac is an incorrigible practical joker. Somehow it reset itself. So Friday when I checked Seattle's extended forecast, I was thrilled to see 7 suns, full and round like perfect egg yolks, laid out across the screen above numbers that for each day began with the number 6. I've made my peace with the prickly pear cactus. Many years ago, in grade school, I passed a warm Tucson afternoon face down on the kitchen linoleum having prickly pear needles plucked from my beeehind. I've held a mild grudge against the plant ever since. Moments before the floor, I'd been… MORE

The Shoshone called this little slice of heaven “Ground on Fire” (tomesha). A bone-dry wash called Furnace Creek cuts along the base of the Funeral Mountains. Elsewhere, Devil's Hole, Last Chance Canyon, Ash Meadows, Dante’s View, and Badwater are other place names that don’t entirely entice.… MORE

Like I told SLS, I’m no doctor. I scribble my phony prescriptions in white chalk on a blackboard in the hallway alongside little cartoon scratchings of birds and piñatas. My advice is highly suspect. Still, I stand by my theory that the brandy Sidecar is the long sought-after cure for… MORE

Of all the rotten things to remind myself about. It occurs to me that last year about this time I was vacationing in Paris. We’d rented a tiny apartment in Montmartre, and although it was just about the greatest couple of weeks in the history of great weeks, when the time came to head back… MORE

Violet_spy left a very nice comment in an earlier blog entry with a request for some cocktail ideas for Valentine’s Day.  I have a couple quick ideas and then a themed list below.  The Negroni.  And the Cosmopolitan.  Both are red in the glass. They come at… MORE

I can’t seem to find any details about what specific cocktails President Obama served at his White House cocktail party last weekend. My guess is that since the drinks were on the house (the White House), you could get pretty much any dang cocktail you wanted.  It’s not like he had… MORE

The Ramos Gin Fizz.* It’s the cocktail that drinks like a meal. But first, it mixes up like a chisel class at the gym. See, the trick to not screwing up this cocktail is to shake it until you just can’t shake it any more. And then…shake it some more. The reason for all this aggressive… MORE
