This sauce came from a good friend's Italian Mother-in-law. It is easy, and by far the best homemade sauce I know of. Great for both Spaghetti and Lasagna. Pssst...the secret is the sugar! Also, as I am now vegetarian, it tastes great with out the meat! Just substitute two tablespoons olive oil for the beef.

Take a long afternoon to simmer this rich and savory blend of tomatoes, onions, garlic, basil, oregano, bay leaves, white sugar, red wine and as much red pepper as your taste buds crave. You could add sausages towards the end, or not, as you wish.

This is very meaty and not near as acid as most sauces. It's really worth the time. It makes a very large batch, so I often freeze half.

Beef or pork neck bones simmered with sauteed vegetables give this sauce a rich flavor. Add tomatoes and cook for several hours until you can't stand to wait any longer. Discard the bones and serve the sauce over a hearty dish of pasta.

Field Grade Spaghetti Sauce

The delightful surprise ingredient in this sauce is cinnamon, and I guarantee that it's absolutely delicious! In the military, the term "field grade" is for Colonels and Generals, as in "He's a field grade officer." That's how this recipe got it's name...by being the cream of the crop! It's one of the many recipes I've accumulated as a military wife for almost 30 years. This sauce freezes well.

My Nana used to cook this for me when I was young and as she prepared things and we waited for the sauce to finish, she'd tell me great stories about her life in Sicily and other secret business! This recipe is the best sauce I've ever had- I really think it can bring the family together. Just prepare it and you'll see that when dinner time comes everyone's mouths will be watering because of the great smell, the entire family can gather around the table and there will be enough for everyone, I promise!

This is a great meaty pasta sauce recipe passed down through the generations from my great great grandfather in Sicily. I also use this sauce when I make my lasagna. I don't like large chunks of meat in my sauce, so I put it all in the food processor when done and it comes out as a very thick meaty sauce.

In Alverton, Pennsylvania, Betty Claycomb keeps this blend of seasonings on hand so she can stir up speedy spaghetti sauce. 'It's a snap to add browned ground beef, tomato paste and water to create a mild, pleasantly flavored sauce,' she says.
